The theme of A Night Divided, by Jennifer A. Niellsen, is that having perseverance always pays off. On pg 248“we need to keep going, I know we'll get to them”. Having perseverance always pays off, and here is why. When Gertas mom found out that they were digging to the west Gertas mom told Gerta and Fritz that they had to stop digging for their own safety. but since Gerta really wanted to find her dad she didn’t stop believing, and kept digging. That is why they ended up finding her father and brother. This is why having perseverance always pays off. On pg 251 Gerta, her mom and Fritz were digging when they heard singing. A song papa used to sing to Gerta all the time “I’m almost positive that’s papa!” Meaning if Gerta would have just quit digging not having perseverance because she thought she was going to get caught. Then she would never even come close as she was to papa and Dominic as she was now. On pg 191 “are you willing to sacrifice other people to get yourself ahead”. Don’t put people behind you just to get yourself ahead. And here is why. Gerta wanted to steal a shovel from someone since they broke the only one they had. They couldn’t buy another one because the money they had was for food and groceries. And if she stole that shovel and then put it back the person she stole it from would get punished due to the mud of the area all over it. But since the officer is smarter than Gerta, he ended up finding out it was Gerta’s and Fritz's shovel and caught them digging. This is why putting people behind you just to get yourself ahead leads to bad consequences. On pg 192 “So, the Lowe children are doing far more than gardening”. If Gerta hadn’t stolen the shovel in the first place then Gerta and her brother Fritz wouldn’t have gotten caught digging. And that is why you shouldn’t put people behind you just to get yourself ahead. Meaning having perseverance always pays off, Is the theme of A Night Divided, by Jennifer A. Nielsen.
