In chapter 2-3 Gerta is at her home eating at the dinner table knowing that her brother and her dad are leaving to go to the west for a few days. She was going to stay at home not knowing that was the last time she’ll see the other half of her family. Early the next morning German soldiers came knocking on the door so her mom went to answer. She couldn’t really hear what was being said but when her mom closed the door and turned around she saw tears and fear in her eyes. Gerta looked at her older brother with confusion when their mom told them her brother and dad got stuck in the west due to the Berlin wall.
In chapter 4 four years later Gerta made a friend named Anna. Anna is the complete opposite of Gerta. she’s quiet has good grades and listen really well. One day they were walking past the wall when Gerta saw a small figure waving at her on the other side of the wall. It was Dominic! Her brother started waving back happily and realized he was 14 now. Soon a guard with grey hair came over and threatened to kill her if she kept interacting with the other side of the wall. She had to walk away in depression wondering if she'll ever be able to see him again.
In chapter 5 Gerta started thinking if she told her mom would she be happy that Gerta saw her brother or mad she didn’t see her son. But it was neither Gerta’s mom was angry that Gerta went up there in the first place. They started arguing about it like they do everyday. Gerta’s mom was afraid that if her daughter was caught she could of died. But little did she know Muller held a rifle up to her cheek but obviously she didn’t say anything. Gerta screamed at her mom saying if she would’ve let them leave with her dad and brother that night they wouldn’t be in this situation.
In chapter 10 Ana and Gerta had a fight. The fight was about the loss of Anna's brother. Ana blamed it on Gertas family because of of her family members knew Anna's brothers plan to escape. He didn’t tell anyone and due to that her brother ended up getting shot. This was sad because now Gerta lossed a friend but it wasn’t even her fault. And now she really has no one to trust.
In chapter 12 Gerta gets a note from her dad. She didn’t know exactly what it meant to later. Her dad wanted her to dig. Dig all the way under the wall to the west. The paper took her to an empty quiet and scary area where she found a war tunnel. It had a rusty long metal ladder going down the side but to deep to see the bottom. She couldn’t possibly dig through all of that without a shovel and she obviously didn’t want to do it on her own. She couldn’t trust Ana anymore, her more would not agree and the only person she fully trusted was Fritz. When she told him he was a little skeptical but knew how important it was to her so he agreed.
In chapter 16-17 Gerta found a bombing shelter. She wondered what it was and why the shovel and flash light too her there. It was because her dad knew about it. He knew about because he once stood in that very shelter. He wanted Gerta to start digging her way to hum. Going all the way under the Berlin wall to the west without getting caught. Gerta knew this was dangerous because the people that have tried to escape in the past years lost their life.
In chapter 18-19 Fritz and Gerta went to go get the supplies Gerta found a while ago. It was a whole bunch of shovels and other equipment. They were walking back to the war tunnel when they ran into a lady that started questioning them. She asked where they were doing without an adult even though Fritz would be 18 in a few days. Gerta told the lady that her mom was out and she’ll be back for dinner. When Fritz corrected her saying that their mom was out and hopefully she’ll be back for dinner. Them she asked what the shovels were for. They lied saying they had started a garden. This was bad because they didn’t know that the lady loved gardening so she wanted to come by and help sometime. But Fritz and Gerta didn’t even have the weeds picked up.
