Awake in the night with my Parkinson’s fight
I’m no longer dreaming because my leg is screaming,
So let’s take another pill and hope to be still,
Gradually I drift away & prepare for a new day,
Now it’s morning I arise with hope, but so too does Parky that little dope..

Parkinson's at dawn: I prepare to usher in the morn.
As I rise from my bed, my legs are stiff and heavy, like lead
Medication will put right what went wrong in the night!
As the day draws on I feel better, fitter, strong
Days go by as days must. In medication we must trust.
Bob McEwen, Billingham, Living with Parkinson's since 2016
Marilyn Rule, Scarborough, Living with Parkinson's since 2005
Try doing buttons with mittens on,
Threading a needle wth cottton
These are little things
That frustration brings
To someone suffering from Parkinsons
Marilyn Rule, Scarborough, Living with Parkinson's since 2005
Pia, London, Parkinson's UK staff member
I was never one for great speeches,
Or talks of inspiring oration!
But at least it was good,
To be understood!
And not suffer from this “Stutter Frustration”
David Usher, Sunderland, Diagnosed December 2021
Yvonne Usher, Sunderland, partner, of someone with Parkinson's
I once had a reasonable vitality,
And was known for a quick witted reposte!
Now, I appear “all at sea!”
But between you and me,
I’ve only gone missing, not lost!
David Usher, Sunderland, Diagnosed December 2021
Annabel Theaker, Basingstoke, Parkinson's UK staff member
His dancing days are strictly behind him,
Now Parkinson’s has taken its toll!
But whilst he can no longer jive,
To “Staying Alive!”
He can still “Shake, Rattle and Roll!”
Yvonne Usher, Sunderland, partner, of someone with Parkinson's
Parkinsons, not just shakes
Stiffness, fatigue, memory, aches.
Much, much more, too many to say.
But, help is there along the way.
Helplines, facebook, forums, groups, specialists who'll jump through hoops
There was a man with a tremor
Other symptoms, they were a dilemma
He went to his doc
Who listened a lot
Sent to a Parkinsons nurse named Emma.
I fall over three times a day
I do ten press-ups
While I'm down
To stay positive
Parkinsons won't beat me.
Her walk was slower with thoughts in a cloud,
Desperately wanting to scream out loud,
Composing herself, looking up to the sky,
Without hesitation she started to cry,
Tremors returning, not knowing why.
There`s a condition that is sometimes called Parky
That can make you(and your carer) feel Narky
But keep taking those pills
To deal with your ills
And you`ll hopefully soon feel quite Sparky
I fall over three times a day
"Why do you do it?", they say.
I answer back
I like to play, "Hit the Road Jack."
Parkinson's makes me do that.
One thing about PD I know
The carers are stars of the show
They keep us in touch
They give us so much
And accept that we act rather slow
There once was a parky called Garth,
Sorting his meds out on a Sunday was no laugh,
Getting them on time was the Groove,
Or he’d not be able to move,
and often get stuck in the bath
Parkinson’s came into your life one day
And it decided to stay
I said your time is limited
Research is progressing
A cure will soon be on its way
Other Angel of the North, Wallsend, Volunteer with Parkinson's UK
PD puts you in quite a poor state
Trembling hands and a shuffling gait
Though we can't overcome
Many of the things that it's done
A "good day" is well worth the wait!
Mr Parkinson gave it a name
That thing that inhabits my bran
As I sit here and ramble
I wish I could strangle
That man with his pestilent name.
Ddraig, Stockton on Tees, Living with Parkinson's since 2016
There once was a nurse, name of Claire,
Whose primary role in healthcare,
Was for Parkinson's Folk,
Which was no flipping joke,
There's so many it made her despair!
There once was a woman called Manda
who walked with a stagger and lurch
She fell over with ease
and bruised both her knees
But a black eye made her look like a panda
Amanda Thomas, Tewkesbury, Living with Parkinson's since 2018
Still young just sixty or so
Had plenty of get up and go
But this sneaky disease
Brought us all to our knees
But I’m damned if I’m letting you know.
Andrew, North Yorkshire, Friend of someone with Parkinson's
It all started when my right hand was shaking ….
And the muscles in my body were continually aching …
That’s when people noticed
that I was beginning to Freeze ….
Then my GP confirmed I Had Parkinson’s Disease
Mick Charters, Wallsend, Living with Parkinson's since 2007
Parkinson's disease makes you ill at ease with shaking hands like rubber bands
With shuffling feet to take a seat
with two things at once and no response
We need a cure that's for sure
No time to mope we live in hope.
Steve Lane, Stokesley, Living with Parkinson's since 2017
There's a fantastic lady called Dora
She's persuasive, you just can't ignore her.
She didn't get fazed
Just a fortune she raised
And we at Parkinson 's applaud her
Dave, Stockton on Tees, Volunteer with Parkinson's UK
I'm lucky I don't have PD
But its effects are plain to see
To run their race
With a smile on their face
PDers are an inspiration to me!
Dave, Stockton on Tees, Volunteer with Parkinson's UK
Parkinson's tennis is fun
Even though none of us can run
We serve and we volley
It's all very jolly
And then we have tea and a bun.
Gerry Crowe, Houghton Le Spring, Living with Parkinson's since 2016
Parkinson's tennis is fun
It's exercise second to none
In spite of the shakes
And lots of mistakes
We're fitter than when we'd begun.
Gerry Crowe, Houghton Le Spring, Living with Parkinson's since 2016
"Hello" how are you?
"Fine" I reply with a smile
Because that's what I do
But you wait a while
Fatigue arrives medications due
Margaret Stone, St Albans, Living with Parkinson's since 2014
You know your Parkinson's down on the file?
I deny all this, but inside I know it's true
So what can I do to combat this trial?
I'll swim, walk, howl and chat over a brew
With friends, as that's what I do
Margaret Stone, St Albans, Living with Parkinson's since 2014
If it’s a question you have or a need
At PUK, we all live by a creed
To put each one first
To be fully immersed
In our mission to help guaranteed
Gini, Silverstone Parkinson's UK staff member
A clever old Doctor from London,
Observed the palsy in patients he took on.
So an essay he wrote
On this subject oft quote
The condition we now call Parkinson (s)
John Hinston, North Ferriby, East Riding, Living with Parkinson's since 2008
To raise awareness and find a new way
To be rid of Parkinson’s per se
Through research knowhow
For better outcomes right now!
Is the dream that we strive for each day!
Gini, Silverstone Parkinson's UK staff member
There once was an RAF flier
Got a touch of the ‘Cecil’s’-that’s dire!
In his scooter he flies
To the neighbours surprise
You can’t say he isn’t a trier!
Sheila Turner, Ryedale, Family member, partner or carer for someone with Parkinson's
Parkinson’s patients are a delight and despite your diagnosis you are always so bright.
Working as a Parkinson's secretary can be hard,
But speaking to you daily makes this job more of a reward.
I wouldn’t change my job for the world and this is because of you,
In spite of everything, you are so strong and true.
Suzanne Cook, Sunderland, Neurology Medical Secretary
Parkinson’s patient’s brighten your day,
Speaking to them daily brings a smile to your face,
They overcome hurdles and obstacles with no complaints,
Even with the challenges they have, they take each day like a race.
They don’t let their condition hold any restraints.
Suzanne Cook, Sunderland, Neurology Medical Secretary
For Parkinson's, we did a Parkrun,
A sea of cyan, it was great fun
We ran for the cause
And made people pause
We hope Parkinson's, one day, will be gone!
Linny, Whitley Bay, Parkinson's UK staff member
I really should stand up much straighter
my problems get greater and greater
my body is bending
my height is descending -
Straighten Up, to stop trouble later
Stokesly Parkinson's Poets, North Yorkshire, Volunteer with Parkinson's UK
Poker Face
I might be good at poker
My face reveals no emotion
Who can tell my tell
Yes my hand shakes
But is it hearts or spades?
David Ainsworth, Leeds, Living with Parkinson's since 2017
I’ve worked with People with Parkinsons for 20 years
There has been lots of laughter, support and tears
What keeps me going every day
Are the amazing people taking on challenges come what may
Inspirational, strong, resourceful, resilient warriors who face their fears
Kay Andrews, Wokingham, Parkinson's UK staff member
Parkinson’s doesn’t define a person,
Parkinson’s is part of a person.
We live with it, we love with it, we dance with it.
Life goes on and life is beautiful.
This beautiful dancing Parkinson’s life.
Molly Grey, Northumberland, Community Dance Practitioner
I wonder where my voice has gone
I wish I could burst into song
I want to shout
but it won't come out
Why is my body going so wrong?
Sheila, carer, North Yorks
The coffers are empty, we need to do more
Let's work together to fundraise a cure
Running or walking
Partying or talking
Having fun makes a difference for sure
Strengthening Connections, Parkinson's UK
Why is it that my leg won't move ?
My wife says 'march' and off it goes.
That doorway stops me in my tracks
But I can catch a ball
You watch!
As from Ron who died February 2017 aged 86. Kent
I only wish he did not suffer
But our Support Group is a buffer.
It can't be wrong to share and smile.
The price too high, but there I've found
The best of friends to be around.
Sue, Carer , Kent
Parkinson’s make me shake and shuffle
My voice is weak my speech muffled
I now shuffle less and can be heard
Exercise is the magic word
Parkinson’s team “THANK YOU"
Ray, Maidstone, person with Parkinson's
The medals on your chest catch the bright clinic lights.
The soldier you were, is still here.
When age and illness come to me,
and I sit where you are now, I will not forget.
A man is more than the sum of his tremor and his falls.
Dr Uma Nath, Gosforth, Parkinson's consultant
When you hear those four words 'you have got it'
Do not fear, give up hope, wish it's not it.
You are still you,
Don't let it become you,
Join the Parkinson's fight til we cure it.
So many people are here to support you,
Encourage you, build you up when you feel blue,
We are in this together,
Let's end it forever,
Research, find a cure ....Parkinson's who?
Now a colour-coded delivery
Not the silver discarded husks
Idly dropped, shorn of seeds.
My life measured out in blister packs
Of diminishing returns.
Shakes & tremors are what people expect to see,
The struggles, the fights, the long long nights,
The loneliness, isolation in your own head,
Should I just stay in my nice warm bed,
Nope I’ve got this, it all started in my head !!
Parkinson’s is quite new to me
I don’t know yet how bad it can be
It has brought to the fore
Things I couldn’t do before
A new-found creativity!
Parkinson’s is a label I wear
It causes some people to stare
It does not define me
Despite what you see
I wish some people were more aware
My joints may be stiff and awkward.
A strict meds timetable may rule my day!
Just what do I see
When I look at me?
I see an active person adapting my way.
Support and friendship is the key to survival.
A positive outlook to keep going each day.
So what do you see
When you look at me?
Someone who is keeping Parkinson's at bay.
Problems with balance and coordination
Got trouble with legs and locomotiom
Thank God for speech therapists
Not to mention neurologists
Without them...a worse situation
Rubbing in was the first sign for me
I was making a crumble for tea
But my fingers wouldn't do
What I wanted them to
And the reason I just couldn't see.
There’s a place called the Parkinson’s Caff,
Where you go for a chat and a laff,
And if advice is sought,
Don’t give a thought,
To asking the best of the volunteer staff
We have a big problem today
Of keeping Parkinsons at bay
Let's fund more new work
Make sure you don't shirk
Contribute without further delay
Was doing fine for years without you in my life
Then along you came unbidden and caused me so much strife
Oh what a raft of symptoms to me you did present
They come and go, some are slow but others quite frequent
I am just coping, carrying on and hoping
There was an old geezer named Ron
Who found he had Parkinson
But being no quitter
He tried to stay fitter
Till the elusive cure came along
I've got this condition Parkinson's it's name,
I share it with some celebrities
U might recognise some names,
Sinha, Clarke, Connelly, Diamond, Fox,
& Muhammad Ali the greatest of the lot
Pills
For sure they were designed by a witch,
With side effects from death to an itch,
They've made an Art
Of tearing me apart,
And leaving me the pain and the twitch.
Parkinson's makes me tired, achy and sore
And my brain work quite right any more
But at least I'm still here
And I don't live in fear
Our numbers are too great to ignore.
I’ve read how the Doctors’ explain
What’s going on in my brain
If I’d bought it on the High Street
I’d be looking for the receipt
And I’d take it back and complain
There was a cocktail waiter from Surrey,
when told he had parkinsons didn't worry,
with tremors & shakes,
posh drinks he did make,
served shaken not stirred on a plate
Parkinson’s people are lovely people
I work with them everyday.
Their courage, resilience, their laughter
It makes me proud to say
“I work for Parkinson’s UK” - Together we’ll find a cure, together we find a way
Though having Parkinson’s is a curse
And has put my life in reverse
The new friends I’ve made
Are of the highest grade
And I realise life could be worse
It’s a funny old thing, this disease
Y’get something called bradykinesia
While your head wants to go
Your body is slow
But trust me, it does become easier
My right foot said ‘Let’s go and play!’
My left foot said ‘Please go away!’
But I worked on my gait
Got everything straight
And I’m running the parkrun today.
My husband is starting to go.
His body is on a go slow.
His feet, which are neat
Slide along every street
Far better than at a disco.
In a hall in our Cumbrian town
See Parkinsons folk dance around
We all twirl with glee
And then drink our tea
It helps to keep us all sound
There’s an annual event called World Parkinson’s Day
Celebrated the world over, even in Mandalay
You’re invited to join
If a limerick you coin
With some luck they just might find a cure someday
Parkinson’s, isn’t something you’d choose for yourself
As if you could pick what’s wrong with you from off a shelf
But what if you could?
What is the likelihood?
You’d select something better than that for yourself
There once was a Parkinson's Disease
That brought lots of people to their knees
The governments funded enough
The researchers did their stuff
And the patients were soon climbing trees
Go on, write a limerick
It's easier than you think!
I'm dismal at rhymes,
but it's only 5 lines...
Wrote this as quick as a wink.
145,000 people and growing
Parkinson's numbers show no sign of slowing
More than tremor or shakes
Many symptoms it makes
Which is why, about this condition, it's worth knowing
Parkinson’s….a word so unfamiliar to me,
But like a bolt out the blue you came into view,
Time ticks by and I discover,
pills and potions may delay you,
But only love and hope will defeat you!
I have this medical condition
Parkinsons it's name
It's neurogical to do with my brain
Yes it's life changing but not life ending that's for sure
Keep in touch we'll all party the day we find a cure
Shuffle, freeze , cramp and spasms,
Cog wheel, lead pipe, cant fathom,
Choking, falling and up in the night,
Surely there's a cure for this thing,
right?
As an Adviser working for Parkinson’s UK,
I speak to people who express fear, yet hope every day.
So much for people to endure;
Can’t Give In. Can Find A Cure.
Together, united, there is a way.
Body not going to work today,
My tablets are in disarray,
not good,
like plank of wood,
there's got to be a better way.
There was a young fella called Lance
Who thought he would learn how to dance
But his Parkinson’s shake
Caused his braces to brake
And now he can dance in his pants
There once was an old boy from Cherry Hill
Who claimed that his meds made him very ill
So he stopped taking his pills
Of course you all know the drill
His Parkinson’s is worse than it’s ever been
You won't see me do Strictly on telly.
My Parkinson's legs are like jelly.
I don't dance like Fonteyn
But please don't complain.
I write poetry like Percy Bysshe Sheley.
There was a young lady called Cassie
Who thought she was frightfully sassy
But when she did the twist
The Judges said ‘Please desist’
Carry on and you’ll damage your chassis
Parkinson's nights have hours to kill
Did I forget to take a pill?
Stand sit, Stand and sit,
Twirl around a little bit
FOR GOODNESS SAKE, KEEP STILL! JUST CHILL!
Whose arm is this? I wonder why
It's pointing now up to the sky .
It feels detached.
It feels mis-matched
why cant sleeping arms lie!!?
For retirement i'm enthusiastic
And I know Parky's pretty drastic,
but to wake monday morning
and remember while i'm yawning
no work again! It's fantastic!
Who was it said 'bout counting sheep?
to help you have a restful sleep?
no Parky for them,
No telling when
My next 8 hours are going to be deep!
I'm like the princess and the pea
Any crease in the bedcothes bothers me
turn left then turn right
It goes on all night
And the morning is a relief to see
