Welcome to the second edition of Success by Design's Snapshot!

Success by Design is a committee comprised of PVCC faculty, staff, and students who work to help students! In 2019-2020, we held campus events like Midterm Tent Event. Now, in a mostly virtual environment, we decided to create an electronic newsletter that offers helpful resources and tips to support YOU!

How to SUCCEED in a REMOTE LEARNING or ONLINE Class

Make a Study Schedule

Schedule Time for Reading, Studying, and Completing Assignments

Now that the spring semester is underway, it's time to get back to work! Rather than wait for inspiration and intrinsic motivation, plan your college success by scheduling time to read, study, and complete assignments.

Time management can be a challenge. Creating a study schedule can help you hold yourself accountable and make your college experience more manageable, so you can make time for work and social life. In addition, it ensures that you are setting aside enough time every week to read, complete assignments, as well as study and review for exams. It is generally accepted that college students devote 2 hours of study time a week for every credit hour in a 16 week period, but for online it is suggested you spend approximately 3 hours a week on work related to a 3 credit class that is taken in 16 weeks. That means, you should expect to devote 9 clock hours doing work related to a 3 credit course taken in 16 week format. If your class is more than 3 credits or more than 16 weeks, you need to set aside more time each week (i.e.-3 credit online class in 8 weeks=18 clock hours a week).

The number of hours to devote to a class are guidelines to help you with scheduling; you might need to devote more or less time depending on your background knowledge of the subject, your reading speed, and your comfort level with the types of assignments you must complete.

Below you will see a sample of a study schedule (for days 4, 5, 6).

Canvas Features You May Not Know About

  1. Calendar

Did you know that you can see all assignments (and pages) due for all of your classes in one place? Go to 'Calendar' on the left sidebar and select all the Canvas courses you wish to see on your calendar. Each class will be displayed in a different color and will have a line marked through the assignment once you complete it!

2. Pronouns

Using someone's preferred pronouns is a way to show respect for their gender identity. Now that we are all in an online enivornment, it's a good idea to designate your preferred pronouns to let your professors and classmates know how you would like to be addressed.

To designate your pronouns, go to "Account" on left, blue sidebar. Then, "Settings" on left sidebar and "Edit Settings" on the right side of the screen. See image below.

3. Academic Help and Resources

In addition to PVCC's Learning Success Center listed at the top of this issue of Snapshot, you have two options for help within Canvas: Brainfuse and Puma Resources for Students. As you can see in the image below, both of these resources are listed in the left sidebar of your class.

Brainfuse offers live, and on-demand online tutoring. Have a paper due date coming up? Submit it in Brainfuse for feedback. You will need to allow 24-48 hours, so be sure to submit well in advance of your deadline. Also, anytime you ask for feedback on your writing, whether it be in Brainfuse or the Learning Success Center, be sure to be specific. Do you want feedback on your paper's organization, thesis, evidence, word choice/clarity, etc.? Someone who reviews your paper won't be able to give you feedback on everything, so be sure to mention what is the most important to you.

Puma Resources for Students has a variety of resources listed and hyperlinked all in one place. Here you will find resources such as Q Building's Math Tutoring and Testing Center, a self-enrollment code to MCCCD Free Write Canvas course, and information about Counseling, Career Services, Disability Resources, and graduation.
