I have been very fortunate to be involved in Pasifika education during my time as a school leader, as well as enjoying many experiences of visiting Pacific islands, in particular Samoa and Tonga. In my previous role as Principal at Aranui High School, I was involved with the organisation of school trips to both of those islands. I also was engaged in some teaching at a remote secondary school in Upolu, Samoa, on a sabbatical a few years years ago.

Almost quarter of the students at Papakura High School are of Pasifika descent. In term 1 of each year, many are heavily involved in the Auckland Secondary Schools Polyfest. This is a very big event on our school calendar. Students give up many hours over lunch time, afterschool and weekends in preparation for Polyfest.
