In the final year of NCEA Dance, students will be working towards embracing creativity, independence, self-expression, and performance qualities. As students near adulthood, we will focus on exploring more mature and meaningful themes in their choreography.
At this level, there is a strong emphasis on using a wide range of elements of dance to shape and develop choreography. Students are expected to demonstrate meaningful and thoughtful use of elements of dance to enhance their choreography.
The goals for students in NCEA Level 3 include taking ownership of the creative process, making bold and unique artistic choices, reflecting on their work, and creating choreography that connects with audiences.
Level 3 Dance has a strong focus on both the technical aspects of performance and the creative expression of each student. Students who can show both these aspects will excel in level 3 dance.
Students will master three similar dance pieces choreographed by their teachers and guest artists, pushing through rigorous practice to ensure they are stage-ready for a live audience.
The focus of this standard is on repetition. Students will need to incorporate ongoing feedback to achieve a flawless performance while mastering technical elements like expressive facial features, sustained energy, and precise spatial awareness within the group.
Your success in this assessment is determined by the combined quality and average grade of all three performances.
While Dance 3.2 emphasises the choreographic process, Dance 3.4 focuses on the performance aspect of dance. Students will learn a choreography approximately 2 minutes in length and work on refining and perfecting it to perform in front of an audience.
Key focuses of this standard include technical accuracy, expression, timing, spatial awareness, and group synchronisation. Students are expected to demonstrate confidence, stage presence, and a clear understanding of the style and intention behind the choreography.
Students will either learn and perform a social or ethnic dance taught by a guest choreographer, or will choreograph a dance in duos or by themselves.
The focus of this standard is on choosing a topic or theme and creating and performing the themes and ideas of this piece accurately and appropriately.
Compared to Dance 2.3, students at Level 3 are expected to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the background of their topic or theme, perform with greater accuracy and maturity, and show a more intentional connection between the movement and its meaning.
Students will choreograph a group dance, focusing on a topic, question, or theme of their choice.
They will explore how to communicate these high-level ideas through movement by manipulating the elements of dance, with a particular focus on abstraction, motif, and repetition to develop a clear, compelling intention.
The choreography will be approximately 2 minutes in length and must demonstrate a high level of technical maturity, showing how the group has critically unpacked and interpreted their chosen theme through their own refined movement vocabulary.
