The focus of Lv.1 Dance:
Level 1 Dance is a continuation of Year 10 Dance, while also laying the foundation for Level 2 and Level 3 Dance.
Since Papakura High School does not offer Level 1 NCEA credits, our focus is on students passing Level 2 Dance standards.
The main focus of Level 1 Dance is on communication and interpretation, learning how to express ideas through movement and developing the skills to interpret the meaning behind dance performances we observe.
We also have a strong focus on performance, and the elements and aspects required to create a strong and effective performance.
Students will master three distinct dance pieces choreographed by their teachers and guest artists, pushing through rigorous practice to ensure they are stage-ready for a live audience.
The focus of this standard is on repetition. Students will need to incorporate ongoing feedback to achieve a flawless performance while mastering technical elements like expressive facial features, sustained energy, and precise spatial awareness within the group.
Your success in this assessment is determined by the combined quality and average grade of all three performances.
In this standard, students will master a range of choreographic devices designed to transform their creative ideas into professional-grade movement. This is the toolbox that empowers students to become more intentional and versatile choreographers in their own right.
Throughout the process, students will maintain a reflective record of their progress, documenting how their sequences change, analysing what worked (and what didn't), and identifying what they might do differently in the future. Students will explore two to three distinct creative processes that can be seamlessly integrated into any genre, whether their passion lies in Hip Hop and Contemporary or Pasifika and Jazz.
Students will be given a stimulus or topic, such as a kōwhaiwhai pattern and will create choreography of around 1 minute and 30 seconds. using the elements of dance, motif, and repetition.
The focus of this task is to communicate the meaning or symbolism of the group's chosen pattern through movement. Every movement in your choreography must have a clear connection to the pattern and what it represents or could represent.
This assessment is graded on the ideas contributed to the group, as well as how well these ideas show through in the movement
This is an externally assessed standard where students dive deep into the history and characteristics of a specific dance genre. Rather than a performance, this focuses on the 'why' and 'how' of dance, culminating in a written examination at the end of the year.
Students will become experts in their chosen style, preparing to answer in-depth questions regarding:
- The Origins: How and why the style first began
- Key Movement Features: The specific techniques and vocabulary that define the genre
- Social Connections: The relationship between the dancers and the audience
- Performance Context: When and where this dance is traditionally performed
- Visual Design: The symbolic meaning behind clothing, costuming, and prop choices
