The Headless Saint

J. G. Romans

For there upon the craggy rock sat a headless saint,

I asked him who he was, but his answer was quite faint-

“The Lord thy God, high above, gave me this here head,

He said, ‘Love thy neighbor‘ but they chopped it off instead,”

Yes, the man stood, head and halo in his worn and haggard hands-

He left me there all alone, on the craggy rock to stand.
