The Palmyra Middle School building is the oldest school building still standing. It was originally Palmyra High School.

Centenary Academy

Centenary Academy, a private high school, was built in 1910. It was built at the current location of the Palmyra Middle School.

Palmyra High School

In 1913 the Palmyra Public School Board purchased Centenary Academy. The academy and public school combined to become Palmyra High School.

After it Burned

Fire destroyed the Centenary High School in 1920. Arson was suspected to be the cause of the fire.

Rebuilt High School

Bonds were issued for $45,000 to rebuild the high school. The new school was opened on January 5, 1921.

Football Field

The first football field was located on the south side of the school. The current cafeteria is built where the first football field used to be. The current football field was built in fall of 1932.

The bleachers were built by the CCC.

The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) was a group from 1933 to 1942 who hired unemployed, unmarried men to do public service jobs.

Extra Additions

Increased enrollment and demands for a gym and community auditorium lead to plans to add to the High School. $112,000 was provided through government building programs, bonds, and donated funds.

The WPA

Many parts of the school were constructed with the assistance of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was a government program that hired people during the Great Depression to do public service jobs.

The Gym

In 1938 the gymnasium was built on the south end of the school. It was built with help from the WPA.

The First Elementary Classrooms

Eight elementary classrooms were added onto the new Palmyra High School in 1939. Washington School was closed and sold. The new classrooms were constructed with the assistance of the WPA.

Agricultural Building and Veteran Classes

In 1948, behind the current middle school location, a small building for agriculture classes was built.

In the 1950's and 1960's, the agricultural building was used to teach classes to veterans arriving home from World War II.

South Wing Addition

In 1961 multi-purpose rooms were added to the south end of the high school. This included the Cafeteria and Kitchen, and rooms for Home Economics, Band, and Vocal, plus locker rooms.

Lloyd King Arts Building Addition

In 1965, due to increasing student enrollment, the addition to the current Palmyra Middle School building, known as the "Lloyd W. King Arts Building," was built on the north end of the high school.

Becoming a Middle School

The sixth grade moved from the Elementary to the Middle School in 1968. In 1970, ninth through twelfth grade was moved to the new High School, and fifth grade was moved to the Middle School.

PACE

Palmyra's gifted program, PACE, was added in 1986.

Before Renovation

The center portion of the building was three stories tall for about 25 years. All students 7-12 grade went to this school. The school wasn't handicap accessible.

Plan For Renovation

Plan for reconstruction:

  • preserve and restore the usable portions of the present building

  • new construction on the north (classrooms) and the west (locker rooms and bathrooms)

  • Three-story to two-story and a handicapped accessible library, office, and classrooms.

  • About 50% of the school building would be new.

Beginning of Renovation

In 1997, the first phase of the middle school reconstruction began. An addition on the north end of the second floor included 10 new classrooms. To the west of the gym, new bathrooms and new girl's and boy's locker rooms were built. The first phase was completed in May of 1998.

First renovation for the north end of the building, which included the art room and more classrooms.

Second Phase

The second phase began with the center portion of the building being removed. The current classrooms, built in 1968, were remodeled.

In 1998, two temporary wooden links were built to allow students safe passage between the two ends.

Finished Renovation

Students came back from Christmas break in 1999 to a completed center portion. A new lobby had been added where the center portion was before.

2014 Renovation

In 2014, the south end of the building was renovated for better security and energy efficiency.
