In 1843 Palmyra established a public school system. In the beginning public schools were not very popular. Public schools were considered inferior, and more well-to-do parents did not want their children going to school with poor children.
The Beginning
One of the earliest public school was located on the site of the Lincoln school.
Washington School
In 1874, Washington School was completed at Home and Hamilton. Two floors were built with two rooms on each floor. The first class graduated from Washington school in 1898 with three graduates.
