Is using an AI cheating? It depends. AI chatbots run on large language models trained on massive amounts of text, generating responses that sound natural and often convincing—which makes copying them tempting. But passing off text that you didn't write as original work is plagiarism, whether the source is a person or a program. That said, AI tools aren't off-limits: With a teacher's permission, they can help you brainstorm ideas, spark new angles, or assist with research—as long as facts get verified and any AI use is properly credited. Think of a chatbot like a spell-checker or calculator: a useful tool, not a replacement for original thinking. Writing builds reasoning, argumentation, and communication skills—and that's how real learning happens. Press "play" to find out how to use AI as a shortcut to better thinking, not a shortcut around it.
