The beginning of the school year is a magical time of getting to know the other humans that students share a space with, make memories with, and learn with for six hours a day for a total of one hundred eighty days.
In order to build a strong classroom community, students got to know each other by exploring what makes each one of them unique and celebrating all that connects us.
Through this unit, we explored the things we are most proud of, the things we wanted to learn, and the importance of working together to grow as a classroom community. We hope that each student has a better understanding of the people they share their day with and that they have learned that everyone contributes something different to our classroom community and the world we live in. We also aimed for students to be inspired by the people that we have learned about, and know that it’s not what you look like physically, but what’s inside your heart and brain that matters most.
An Exhibition provides students the opportunity to showcase their learning to an authentic audience.
During Roosevelt Elementary's Curriculum Night (September 2022), students shared their knowledge and work with their families. They were able to explain what they made, why they made it, and how their differences contributed to their class communities. With over 100 families in attendance, the Roosevelt Elementary community observed the power and deep learning that PBL provides its students.
