Op/Ed: Cancel Culture - Accountability or Bullying?

Sarah Delhomme

What if your favorite celebrity said the n-word or was stereotyping Hispanic people? Would they still be your favorite celebrity or would they be considered canceled? In my opinion I think that cancel culture is not good for the society because it amounts to online bullying and can incite violence and threats even worse than the original offense being called out. Callout culture is a slippery slope and leads to intolerance in democratic societies as people systematically exclude anyone who disagrees with their views. That’s not cool how you guys cancel people for making mistakes.

Ileana Rodriguez

In my opinion I think cancel culture is good because it tends to fight back on sexism, racism, or any other types of abuse or harmful wrongdoing that affects others. It also shows that people without power or voice can speak out their own opinion to cancel culture. Cancel culture also tends to wake people up or let them know that what they are doing is wrong.

Cancel culture can help others speak their minds because some may be too scared to tell others the truth or tell the world what they believe in or think is right or wrong. Research shows that cancel culture can increase social status and and reduces social status of enemies. It can even increase social bonds . and lastly it forces enemies to reveal their wrong doings.

Jonathan Cadena-Ramirez

In these days, Cancel Culture is rampantly used as a way to cancel people that have committed horrific actions or disagree with the person “cancelling” them. I strongly believe that cancel culture is a menace and does not benefit either party at this point. The main reasons I believe this are as follows: Cancel Culture is a form of bullying, Cancel Culture does not progress anything and doesn’t change much and Cancel Culture can be used as a weapon by people who don’t like to be disagreed with.

Former president Barack Obama stated, “Like, if I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself, cause, ‘Man, you see how woke I was, I called you out… That’s not activism. That’s not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far. That’s easy to do.”

Anime Review

by Aa'Niyah Ramos

I know many people enjoy watching anime, but the 2019 film Fruits Basket is an anime I really recommend you watch! It's mixed with action, slice of life, romance, comedy, and mystery. It keeps you on your toes, and makes you thirsty for more. The trio, Kyo Sohma, Tohru Honda, and Yuki Sohma, are introduced in Fruits Basket Season 1. They hold a deep dark (not too dark actually) secret, that they try their best to keep, but end up showing Tohru. What secret they let slipped, only you can find out by watching Fruits Basket Season 1.

Overall this is a cute anime and I enjoy all the characters and colors. The storyline is on point! There's no jumping around; it's straightforward and smooth. So download the Funimation app and get watching!
