Miss, Why Are We Learning This?

by Kendall Anglin

We all have a moment when we just want to get away from the world. We all feel like we have no one to talk to, we feel alone. But in the case of NF, which stands for Nathan John Feuerstien, he turns his hardships into music. He is not like everyone who just talks about problems for one day and moves on with their life. He constantly talks about how this world is going downhill. He is the type of person who doesn’t hold back.He engages himself in the problems of society today, problems such as depression, anxiety ,stress, and just losing yourself in a whole. Nate has had a long history of depression and anxiety. In the life of Nate he had to experience a tragic moment when his mother passed away from a drug overdose. In a music video known as “How Could You Leave Us” he expresses his pain about losing his mother and how selfish she was for choosing drugs over her own son’s and her life. In his new album he expresses how we now live in a world where we can’t feel sad or how we are just in a “phase.’’

In today’s society kids are being taught how to take tests and not how to do real life things. In general most kids don’t know how to do bills, taxes, or fill out a resume. These things are important and it should not be entirely left up to the parents to teach. Some kids don’t have role models, or their parents don’t care, so how are they supposed to learn?

According to Credit Karma, on average, younger people have lower credit scores due to lack of knowledge. Teachers say they give all prerequisite skills. For example, math classes teach percentages and transferring numbers from here to there, but how does that help kids when they won’t know how to use those skills in the future? According to Quaro.com, kids don’t find it interesting and don’t retain it. Most kids dislike at least one of the subjects taught in school, but they are still required to pass that class,so why not have a REAL life skills class as a requirement?

There is a song by Boyinaband called “Don’t Stay in School.” The message of the song is that we learn all these things that we will never use again unless our profession is focused on it. Some of the lyrics in the song are, “I wasn’t taught how to get a job// but I remember dissecting a frog.”, “I was shown the wavelengths of different hues of light// but I was never taught my human rights. Apparently there’s 30, do you know them?”, “How to recognise the most deadly mental disorders // or diseases with preventable causes // How to buy a house with a mortgage // if I could afford it cause abstract maths was deemed more important.” This song is really what happens day to day. Kids go to school every day and learn things that really won’t help them in the future, while they could be going to school learning things that will help them in the long run.
