Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. - Anton Chekhov
This is going to be a great year!
"Sapere aude" is a Latin phrase meaning "dare to know" or "dare to be wise". It is a call to use your reason and intellect.
I am truly dedicated to this phrase, and to meeting the needs of my students through a students-first philosophy. I believe in the importance of motivating and engaging students in learning consistent with both course requirements and needed critical skills... whilst still deepening an understanding to the world that is all around.
I earned my M.A. at the University of South Florida and an M.Ed. at Florida Atlantic University. For over three decades, both as an adjunct and as full-time faculty, I have been teaching a range of college composition courses (ENC1101, ENC1102, etc.) and literature courses (LIT1000, AML2010, AML2020), etc. at colleges and universities both locally (Palm Beach State College, Broward College) and overseas (University of Brighton in England).
In addition to teaching in higher learning, I currently teach a range of courses, including Advanced Placement in Literature and Cambridge AICE AS, in Palm Beach at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts. DSOA has been listed by Time and Newsweek as one of America's top-rated schools in secondary education, scoring in the top 100 for several decades.
In addition to being certified by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in Effective College Instruction, I was designated as a “High Impact” teacher for my success with students in grades 9-12 by the Florida Department of Education. In 2016-17, I was chosen as Palm Beach county’s “Innovative Educator” (Technology Matrix, Adaption category). For nearly a decade, I have been working closely with the company that brought us Google to learn how to bring life to learning and to teaching.
Since 2024, I have been part of the KHAN Ambassador program, writing curriculum for Khan Academy and Palm Beach County Schools to help teachers use a student-centered approach when utilizing AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the classroom. I am also already versed in several LMS on-line educational environments (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom Suite, SIS, Edline, etc.).
Furthermore, I continue to speak at conferences and to numerous organizations and groups on topics ranging from engaging people with Artificial Intelligence to literature and publishing. My most recent speaking engagement was at the 2025 School District of Palm Beach County Technology Conference. The topic was on being "Tech-Savvy Teaching: Dynamic Learning w/ Khan, Google, & AI". Until the pandemic, I was one of the longest concurrent speakers at the annual Palm Beach County Technology conferences and have spoken at the FETC conferences in Orlando.
In addition, I am published in a wide range of publications, such as The Tampa Tribune metropolitan newspaper and the Sun-Sentinel's South Florida Parenting magazine. My fiction and poetry appear in multiple literary magazines and publications. I have also produced newsletters, brochures and pamphlets for a range of organizations and private businesses, including for the Florida Council for Teachers of English. Most recently, I wrote and produced a Boynton Beach community newsletter: The Greystone Glory.
Another wonderful day in paradise,
Richard S. Ehrlich, M.A., M.Ed.
Below are samples of my writing in my days working at The Tampa Tribune, USF's The Oracle, etc.
