"I went into this year without a fully realized vision but instead a cold determination to do something I would be proud of in my end-of-the-year reflection. I opted to spend my time improving on my writing abilities, devoting months of my time and energy (and finger mobility) to an over 30 page research paper on Afrofuturism. After all that time with the topic, it ended up bleeding into every facet of my life: Afrofuturist films flooded my Letterboxd recently watched, I often mused on the immense impact of the Haitian Revolution in modern day media, and suddenly I had several spin-off projects about Afrofuturism under my belt. I am very thankful for this opportunity to fully nerd out on a topic in an academic setting; this foray into the white tower unlocked the pretentious film kid/history buff that lives within me and has made me very excited to major in Film Studies and Classical Studies in college. One small step for me, and one MASSIVE leap backwards for everyone who is forced to hear me yap incessantly.
I also got to work with some of my closest friends on several different projects as a screenwriter, producer, or director. In those moments, where everything went wrong but somehow turned out good enough to screen in class, I have found a truly deep appreciation for filmmaking and for my time at Dreyfoos. I am so excited to see what the future holds for me (and for the next generation of film nerds I will be forced to watch grow up every time I come back to visit my little sister). "
Signing off,
