You’re a highschool student and maybe it feels as though college is far away. But it’s actually a lot closer than you think.
Maybe you’re panicking because you have no idea what you want to do with your life. You have to choose a career that will make you happy, feel accomplished and make you not hate your job. Or maybe you prefer money over enjoying the job.
Depending on what you’re like, many different career options await you.
Education
If you like the feeling of doing something good in the world and helping future generations, being a teacher is perfect for you.
It is not an easy job, as you have to manage a classroom on a daily basis while also ensuring that your students are prepared for life outside of school. However, that is what makes the job rewarding, as you get to see students grow and evolve over the school year.
If you feel like being a teacher is too much, there are other jobs available in education. The School District of Palm Beach Country provides many other education related jobs that do not include teaching.
Some of these jobs include bus drivers, janitors, cafeteria workers, etc.
Law
Working in law requires additional education beyond a normal college degree. It also requires taking two tests in order to become a lawyer (most careers in law require you to become a lawyer): the Florida General Bar and the Multistate Professional Responsibility.
Careers in law often tend to be stressful, but the pay is high, with an average pay of $57k to $150k per year.
Literature
If you like writing or reading, studying literature might be a good option for you.
The most obvious application for a literature degree is through writing, such as being a writer or an editor. However, there are other applications for a literature degree. Other jobs include teacher/professor, librarian, and public relations.
Sales
Maybe you’re more of the sales type of person. You’re good with people, good at persuading people. Charisma comes with this job. A job in sales entails selling and persuading customers to buy an item. You need to know the facts about the products you’re advertising and trying to sell. These jobs range from working for a small paper company to selling houses as a real estate agent.
Engineer
In order to become an engineer, you need to be good at science (specifically physics) and math because of how often it is utilized on the job.
There are several fields of engineering to pursue, and each requires some form of designing or building:
Design (creates designs for projects)
Civil (infrastructure, like bridges and buildings)
Mechanical (focus on machines)
Computer (builds computer hardware and systems)
Electrical (any electrical devices, like smartphones or power systems)
Quality (ensures that products are high quality)
Network (implementing computer networks)
Software (develops software for computers)
Overall, figuring out what you want to do as you become an adult can be challenging. With so many career options and so many things you have to do before them, this can be a stressful time. However, there are a lot of options for a high schooler to choose from, and there is always time to figure out what job fits you best.
