The APAH 250 Curriculum

★ The APAH curriculum features 250 works of art / architecture.

★ This new APAH course (launched in 2015-16 SY) is called "The 250" for short.

★ Because many of the 250 feature more than one image (i.e. details, interior shots of structures, minor components), there are actually 403 official curriculum images.

THE 250 are organized into 10 UNITS (see above) that cover the globe; they are organized by REGION and DATE.

Out with the OLD, in with the 250 ...

How is it different than the old AP Art History curriculum?

★ MAJORLY.

The old course and exam is called "THE LEGACY" course / exam.

It was how APAH ran since its inception in the 1970s. Essentially, the College Board endorsed around 6-8 major Art History survey texts (those big ones with over 1,000 pages in them) and ANYTHING featured in those books was fair game for the exam. It was an insane expectation of content coverage that allowed for very little depth when learning works. Classes essentially learned the "gists" of the art historical eras and artists, not to mention the course was VERY Eurocentric.

What's SO GREAT about the 250 APAH COURSE?

To start ... the course limits the expectation to 250 works of art / architecture (which is a still A LOT) but manageable to cover in one school year. The reduction in works expected to be covered allows for TRUE DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE about those works / cultures / artists / architects.

The 250 is MORE GLOBAL with 35% of the course content covering cultures / artists that are BEYOND the EUROPEAN TRADITION!

Divided up into 10 content areas based on region and date, the new course is much more diverse and way less Eurocentric than its predecessor. Works were also chosen to link THEMATICALLY across the curriculum, illuminating the fact that despite our diversity there are countless common links that historically and contemporarily bind peoples around the globe.
