All students, entering grades 9-12, will be required to complete summer reading assignments. Research has shown students’ reading abilities will decrease with extended time away from reading. This program has helped maintain and increase students’ literacy skills while providing for classroom discussion around the content of the texts.
All students enrolled in an English class are required to read one novel. All students enrolled in a social studies class are required to complete one written assignment. Students in AP Social Studies are likely to also be enrolled in Cultural Diversity or Government for their senior year. These students must complete the social studies summer packet along with their AP requirements for the summer.
This site hosts a page for each grade level designed to help students select which book they will choose to read and also to provide access to the social studies written assignment. There are also pages for AP student reading requirements and FAQ and Special Needs information.
For students and parents who do not wish to purchase summer reading novels, the high school main office will have a limited quantity of copies of novels available for loan (while supplies last) and copies of the social studies assignments available to those who wish to access them (please be reminded that electronic completion is the preferred method for the social studies summer assignment). Additionally, some titles (mainly the AP selections for English classes) can be found in full-text online for free.
Assessment of the required reading texts for all students in English courses will occur during the second week of the school year regardless of the semester in which the student is enrolled in the associated course.
The social studies assignment is due the first week of school (also regardless of the semester that the student is enrolled in the course). Students will need to complete the assignment and share the electronic copy with their assigned social studies teacher. If they have opted to handwrite the assignment, they should turn in the print copy to their assigned teacher or bring it to the library during the first week of school. It is highly advised not to complete the assignment in print but, if they must, be sure to (1) make all work legible and (2) scan or photograph a backup of the work to keep secure since there is no electronic backup system in place.

Have fun with summer reading! We hope we have selected books that students find enjoyable!!!!
