Divergent is a dystopian novel set during an imagined future immersed with societal themes such as power, greed, corruption, guilt and truth. It is a quick moving "page-turner" that keeps the reader wanting more. The film translation would be a great follow-up to the reading experience. However, students will want to remember that their instructor has pulled unique elements from the novel for assessment purposes. Students may enjoy reading the sequels and may have the opportunity to read them as a self-selected readings during their course.

The Five People you Meet in Heaven is a heartfelt story that follows an elderly man upon his accidental death as he meets five people that he has had a great impact upon during his lifetime. This novel is a great choice for students who enjoy a quick and easy read that is also very meaningful. Students who choose this novel may become fans of the author (who is deeply philosophical in way that appeals to readers of all ages and walks of life) and may have the opportunity to read his other novels as self-selected readings during their course. While there is a movie based upon this novel, the assessment is designed to align directly to the book.
