In 1872 Benjamin Meisenhelder bought the Condit Mill in Palestine, Illinois. The original mill was located on outer South Jackson Street. His son, Amos, had seen that the mill was for sale when he was traveling through the area. He quickly told his father, and the family moved from Ohio to Palestine to make the purchase. The mill was a family business as Benjamin Meisenhelder ran it with his four sons.
The mill would take wheat and corn and grind it into flour and feed. The Meisenhelder’s were very good at running their business and eventually were able to add on to the mill and also add newer equipment. Their mill actually made the flour for the famous brand “Our Pride” bread. Later land was purchased near the railroad and a brand new, very large milling house was built. This mill stayed in the Meisenhelder family until the late 1950s.
