You may choose to read either Yellowface* by R.F. Kuang or The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. Or both! Please read a hard copy (not audio or electronic). As you read, make note of lines you particularly like; character traits; major plot points; and recurring themes. You may choose any method you prefer for doing this. You will refer back to these notes for our first assignments in the fall.

*Please note that the term “yellowface” is not derogatory but rather a description of a racist practice akin to blackface: “Make-up worn by a white actor playing a person of South-East or East Asian (especially Chinese or Japanese) ethnic origin; the practice of imitating a person of South-East or East Asian origin in this way” (OED).
