Climate

Climate Definition:

The Climate usually refers to the typical or average temperature of a certain place. Climate could also refer to the type of weather that is attributed to a area.

For example, the climate in Florida is very hot and humid. The climate in Alaska is very cold in the winter and warm in the summer.

Types of Climate

There are 5 types of climate that are considered the most common. To classify them we use a system called the Köppen Climate Classification System. Each climate type is given a letter. Tropical climates are coded with the letter A, dry climate with B, Hot climate with C, dold climate with D, and Polar climate with E.

Climate vs. Weather

Both weather and climate measure the atmospheric conditions of a certain place. Both focus on temperature, precipitation, amount of sun, and other factors. The main difference between the two is that weather is constantly changing while climate is generally consistent. Climate usually refers to the general feel of the area.

The Climate of NYC

The biggest factor that affects the climate in our city is the Atlantic ocean. Being next to such a large body of water can change things ranging from precipitation and evaporation to the formation of certain types of fronts. We are also near the Westerly wind belt. As mentioned before, the ocean and winds near NYC make it so that tornadoes and hurricanes can form, while very unlikely.
