Be open to children’s ideas and offer support and understanding when they make their decisions or bring up their thoughts or ideas.
Remember that children are influenced by their interactions with others such as peers and adults in their lives.
Be conscious about language when sharing ideas with or around children.
Always assume that children easily mimic and pick up observed habits and shared beliefs, especially unintentionally.
Explain ideas and thoughts clearly, and positively, in a way that they will understand when they have questions about differences whether physical or otherwise.
Acknowledge children’s observations of inequalities and highlight positive characteristics and aspects.
Positively encourage children to be true to themselves and do whatever makes them happy despite social pressure.
Be mindful of word choice and actions as children look up to adults and view them highly.

Marisa has been working with children of various ages for over 10 years and professionally for about 8 years. She currently works as a swim instructor for ages 3 and up and attends Pacific University where she will receive her B.A. in the spring of 2022. She plans to attend graduate school and obtain her doctorate in clinical child psychology. She hopes that this project will open the door to tough conversations regarding sexism early on for parents and caregivers.
Michael is a psychology major at Pacific University who hopes to attend a graduate school for Speech Language Pathology. He has an interest in language and development and has worked with kids in many different settings. He hopes to keep working with kids and help develop future generations.
