As the huge commercial potential of the video game industry was becoming more and more evident, many companies started quickly developing games to make an easy profit. The market was flooded with an onslaught of terrible, poor-quality games. Further crowding the market was the fact that there were too many platforms to play video games on. The vast majority of people lost interest in video games and the industry crashed. From 1983 to 1985, the home video game market went from $3.2 billion to just $100 million.

Before the Great North American Video Game Crash of 1983, the food company Quaker Oats purchased US Games in 1982 and created 14 games for the Atari 2600 to market their oat products. After a only a year in operation, the Quaker Oats video game division closed their doors.
