With the culture around competitive gaming growing in the 1980’s, Activision started offering real-world prizes to people who mailed in a picture of their high score. Pictured below on the right is the Activision Explorers’ Club Patch given to those who achieved a high score in the video game Pitfall.
Activision’s high-score patches exemplify the rich culture that had formed around video games by this time. Video games had become a competitive hobby that brought people together and held an importance in many people’s lives. The sophisticated culture of competitive gaming also pushed video games to become more complex to fit the demands of gamers. In this way, the culture created by gamers was having a direct impact on the industry itself.
