Spacewar! was created by Steve "Slug" Russell, a member of the Tech Model Railroad Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The game was such a huge success that the whole club got involved with Spacewar!, playing it and working to improve upon it.
The creation of Spacwar! exemplifies one of the first times that a culture had formed around a video game.
