Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make decisions as defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL, "What is SEL?")
CASEL had identified the following five competency clusters: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.
SEL at Clara Barton Elementary
Clara Barton uses the Second Step curriculum. Second Step is an SEL curriculum through which students learn and practice social skills, such as cooperation, problem-solving, empathy, emotion management, and impulse control. Second Step curriculum kits photo lesson cards, discussion questions, student role-plays, videos and songs. Mind Yeti is a mindfulness resource that will be used in conjunction with the Second Step curriculum. Mind Yeti sessions help with focus, awareness, building empathy and can help strengthen students' learning of the Second Step program and how to apply it.
School Wide Practices:
In addition to our special for SEL using the Second Step curriculum, Clara Barton utilizes school wide practices in an effort to enhance and foster students' social emotional learning skills.
