A-G requirements are a sequence of courses taken in High School to meet the minimum admission requirements for UC's and CSU's.
Academic requirements for both systems are:
4 years of English
3 years of Mathematics (4 recommended)
2 years of History
2 years of Science (3 recommended)
2 years of a foreign language (3 recommended)
1 year of Visual & Performing Art
1 year of college prep electives
Required A-G courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Courses with D/F grades may be repeated.
A-G requirements are similar to the minimum admission requirements for private and out-of-state colleges.
CSU is known for basing their courses and degree programs on practical applications and non-research-oriented careers. The CSU system awards mostly bachelor’s degrees, and does not offer as many advanced-level degrees as UC.
The UC system offers more research and theory-based teaching. Many of the professors engage in research, providing students with the opportunity to learn in a research setting. In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees, UC also awards numerous professional and doctorate degrees.
APPLICATION TIP: Enter your classes as SEMESTER (not trimester) on the UC and CSU applications so that your A-G courses calculate correctly.
