STUDENT CENTRAL,PHYSICALS & HANDBOOKS

Every athlete needs a current Sports Physical after April 15th each year, before Season tryouts. Remember, different sports and seasons vary, so stay aware of your child's sport start date. For Spring of 2024, all sports began on March 11th. To get the physical form, visit www.mhsaa.com/schools/forms-resources and choose Physical Card/Medical History Form. Keeping Student Central Accounts updated is crucial for current physicals and acknowledgments. If you're new to Owosso High School, call (989) 729-5494 for help from the Athletic Department.

CONCUSSIONS & SPORTS MEDICINE

Safety remains our utmost priority. While concessions are a part of sports, we prioritize caution when it comes to the well-being of our student-athletes, particularly in cases of suspected concussions. Our experienced Athletic Trainer, Allan Goetzinger, is our in-house expert on concussions and other sports-related injuries, having worked closely with our student-athletes for an extensive period.

When it comes to concussions, our approach is clear: "When in doubt, SIT out and FIND out." It's crucial that both student-athletes and parents play their part by promptly and honestly reporting injuries.  Please allow our Athletic Training Staff see your athlete first where possible, this allows us to promptly engage the expertise of our Certified Athletic Trainer and initiate necessary support. Timely and truthful communication from players ensures that we can address issues effectively, working towards their safe return to the competitive field.

Your well-being is our priority, and we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive athletic environment.

TRANSFER ELIGIBILITY

From time to time, we have to manage issues and concerns from new parents to Owosso Public School regarding the transfer eligibility process. Because some parents do not know, or understand, the restrictions regarding moving students from one district to another, these decisions could have dire consequences for unsuspecting families as it relates to their child's ability to participate.  If you are new to Owosso High School, please review the following attachment and be sure to set up a meeting with the Athletic Department.

MHSAA Sport-Specific Transfer Rule

Please note that eligibility is also determined through Academics and Behavioral Records.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility Requirements

The handbook of MHSAA sets forth the rules governing eligibility and limits of participation with respect to high school student/athletes. The general rules regarding the MHSAA standards student athletes must meet will be posted for all to read. In addition, the Athletic Director and coaches will discuss the eligibility regulations with their parents and teams at Parent Night.

Owosso High School athletic eligibility is based upon the principles of the MHSAA as well as the following rules and procedures adopted by the Board of Education and the Athletic Council.

Coaches will provide the Athletic Director with a team roster listing information required by MHSAA rules. From this, the Athletic Department will conduct grading period checks throughout the school year.

Student/Athletes will meet the following requirements for eligibility:

A. No student/athlete of Owosso High School shall compete in any athletic contest during the first 60 school days of the current semester who did not receive credit in six (6) or more classes in the previous semester.

B. A student/athlete must also be receiving credit in at least six (6) classes during the current semester check. Student/Athletes who are not currently receiving credit in at least six (6) classes will sit out a minimum of one week or until they are currently receiving credit in at least six (6) classes.

C To be receiving credit, a student/athlete must be earning a D- or better.

D. Student/Athletes taking only six (6) classes must be receiving credit in all six (6) classes to be considered eligible.

E. Student/Athletes who do not receive credit in a two-hour or three-hour block class are ineligible

F. Eligibility checks on a student/athlete’s grade will be based on all course work from the first day of the semester up to and including the current week in which the eligibility check is conducted. A student/athlete taking dual enrollment and/or home school courses must be receiving credit in at least five (5) classes recorded on their transcript, to be considered eligible.

G. An incomplete grade “I” will be regarded as not receiving credit if the student athlete does not complete the necessary make-up work. To become eligible, make-up work must be completed prior to the end of the school day the student athlete is to compete. It is the student athlete’s responsibility to return to the Athletic Director an “incomplete” form signed by the teacher, stating that the student has completed all incomplete work and is passing. Only an incomplete grade may be made up. A failing grade (E or F) cannot be made up to affect one’s eligibility status. A student/athlete may be allowed to practice while ineligible, at the discretion of the coach, but will not be allowed to dress for contests or be dismissed from school early for an athletic contest.

If there are specific questions about your athlete's academic eligibility, please contact the Owosso Athletic Department at (989) 729-5494

OPS TRANSPORTATION

We are very fortunate to have the ability to transport student athletes to and from most athletic events for all levels.  All athletes are expected to travel with their team in this regard.  Keeping teams together to and from events is also a very important team unity goal.  If a circumstance presents, parents may request an exception to this rule through their child's coach AND the Athletic Department.  Written requests will be required.
