It’s hard to believe it’s already May, and we’re on the home stretch to becoming first graders! This month, our kindergarteners embraced their curiosity and became true inquirers. They asked thoughtful questions, explored new topics, and investigated the world around them through hands-on activities and discussions. Whether we were learning about butterflies, shapes, or different cultures during International Day, students showed a genuine excitement for discovering new things. We’re so proud of how much they’ve grown as learners and can’t wait to see them finish the year strong!
We all express ourselves in different ways, and it's important to respect how others choose to share their thoughts and feelings. People from different cultures may express ideas and beliefs in unique ways, and understanding these perspectives helps us learn from one another and build a more respectful community.
Learner Profiles in Kindergarten
During International Day, our kindergarteners showed how they can be great communicators by asking thoughtful questions about the culture, traditions, and food of the Dominican Republic. They were curious and respectful, eager to learn more about a culture different from their own. It was a wonderful opportunity to practice listening and speaking skills while celebrating diversity in our classroom community.
Our kindergarteners demonstrated open-mindedness by trying something new. Chocolate-covered bananas with a variety of fun toppings! Students had the opportunity to explore new tastes and textures, and many stepped out of their comfort zones to try it. It was a sweet way to encourage curiosity and celebrate being open to new experiences.
Kindergartners have been reflective by thinking about what it means to be a good citizen in our classroom and school community. They’ve been taking time to talk about their actions, how they treat others, and the importance of kindness, responsibility, and making safe choices. By reflecting on moments where they helped a friend, followed rules, or made a mistake and learned from it, students are growing into thoughtful members of our classroom community.
This month in our science exploration, we’re focusing on butterflies! The students are discovering the incredible life cycle of a butterfly. From tiny egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, a beautiful butterfly. Through hands-on observations and engaging activities, we’re learning about change, growth, and the wonders of nature right in our classroom.
In reading and writing, students have been practicing how to sequence events. One story we focused on was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. After reading, students had the opportunity to become inquirers by imagining themselves as the hungry caterpillar and writing about what they would eat on their own food adventure!
In math, we’ve been exploring and organizing different 2D shapes. Students are learning to name and describe shapes like circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. They’ve been sorting and classifying shapes by their attributes, such as the number of sides and corners. One of the most exciting parts has been using these shapes to create pictures, patterns, and even imaginative designs! This hands-on learning is helping students build a strong foundation in geometry while having fun and thinking creatively.
