In May, our third graders embodied the IB learner profiles of Risk-Taker and Communicator as they approached every challenge with determination and a growth mindset. Students successfully completed both the NYS ELA and Math Exams, demonstrating resilience, responsibility, and strong communication skills. During test prep, they engaged in student-led groups and error analysis, bravely sharing their thinking, asking questions, and learning from mistakes in a collaborative environment.
Aligned with our IB theme Where We Are in Place and Time, students explored global cultures and traditions during our vibrant International Day celebration. They proudly represented their heritage, shared presentations, and deepened their appreciation for diversity and community. May was a month of celebration, courage, and meaningful connection.
Our students are growing as communicators by expressing their ideas clearly through writing, speaking, and listening activities. They asked meaningful questions during our biography readings and shared thoughtful opinions supported by facts. During math projects, they worked together to explain their thinking and present data using graphs. Whether through storytelling or collaboration, students are learning to communicate with purpose and confidence.
Our students showed they are true risk-takers during this unit! They stepped out of their comfort zones by asking deep questions about the people they were learning about and sharing their unique ideas during discussions. Whether imagining new twists in fairy tales or presenting their survey data through graphs, they embraced challenges with confidence. Their willingness to try new things and learn from mistakes helped them grow as thinkers and communicators.
During this unit, students explored fairy tales and biographies through the lens of imagination, history, and significance. They especially enjoyed the fairy tale portion, where their creativity flourished as they reimagined classic stories. When reading biographies, students asked thoughtful questions like, “Why are we even learning about this person?” and reflected on the importance of understanding historical figures. They practiced distinguishing between fact and opinion and used timelines, captions, and other text features to deepen their comprehension.
In math, students are thriving as they dive into data! They conducted their own surveys and collaborated to create bar graphs, line plots, and picture graphs. The hands-on activities and teamwork brought math to life and sparked enthusiasm across the classroom.
We celebrated International Day to honor the diverse cultures and backgrounds in our classroom. Students proudly dressed in traditional clothing, shared facts about their heritage, and explored customs from around the world. It was a joyful day of learning, connection, and celebration—showing how our histories and traditions shape who we are today. Through this experience, students deepened their understanding of identity, global citizenship, and the importance of respecting and valuing differences.
