Mr. McCormack, Ms. Bastible, Ms. Adelaja, Ms. Warner, & Ms. Roth
It's hard to believe we’re already in May! As the school year winds down, our second graders continue to work hard and stay focused. Their enthusiasm for learning, even this late in the year, is truly inspiring. We've seen so much growth—academically, socially, and emotionally—and it's a joy to watch them apply all they’ve learned. From reading and writing to math and science, they show just how much they’ve accomplished. We are so proud of their efforts and excited to finish the year strong together!
Learner Profiles in Second Grade: Balanced, Thinkers, Reflective
Our second graders have been working hard on being great communicators! They've been partnering up with classmates to share ideas, solve problems, and support one another. It's been so fun to watch them help and even teach their partners, using different ways to communicate—like talking, writing, drawing, and listening carefully. They're learning that working together and sharing ideas makes learning even more fun and meaningful!
Our second graders are becoming more knowledgeable every day through their love of reading! They’re exploring new topics, asking great questions, and diving into books that spark their curiosity. It’s amazing to see how much they’re learning and growing just by getting lost in a good book! Being knowledgeable means using what they learn to understand the world better, and our readers are doing just that.
Our second graders have been showing how open-minded they are, especially as we celebrated International Day! They had the chance to learn about different countries, cultures, and traditions, and they were so excited to take on new perspectives. It was a great opportunity for them to ask questions, share experiences, and appreciate the many ways people around the world live and celebrate.
In second grade, we’ve been having so much fun learning all about shapes! We've explored different kinds of shapes like squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles, and we've also learned how to divide them into halves, thirds, and fourths. To make our learning even more exciting, we went on a field trip to a baseball game! At the stadium, we spotted shapes everywhere — the diamond shape of the field, the circle of the baseball, and even the rectangular scoreboard. It was a great way to see how shapes are all around us in real life!
In reading, our second graders have been busy mastering skills like text features and finding the central idea. We’ve also been introduced to dramas and had a blast reading them out loud, with students taking on different characters! In writing, we just wrapped up our opinion pieces and are now diving into an exciting new project—comic books! Students are creating their own superhero stories, choosing a superhero to star in their book, and setting the adventure on a continent of their choice. We also spent time in early May writing all about our moms for Mother's Day!
In second grade, we wrapped up our exciting unit on landforms in science, exploring features like mountains, valleys, and rivers! We then launched into a new adventure, learning about the planets in our solar system and what makes each one unique. In social studies, we shifted our focus to oceans and continents, helping us better understand the world map and where we live. We also got to observe the magic of nature up close by raising caterpillars and watching them transform into butterflies! It was so exciting to see each stage of the life cycle right in our classroom.
In second grade, we’ve started a super fun countdown to the last 26 days of school—ABC-style! Each day, we’re celebrating with a different letter of the alphabet. We kicked things off on May 20th with the letter A: A is for Animal Day, where everyone brought their favorite stuffed animal to school! We can’t wait to see what the rest of the alphabet brings—our countdown is packed with fun, laughter, and unforgettable activities!
