In December, our pillar is Respect. Ms. J., the librarian, also published an article called Mind Your Library Manners in the School Library Journal about respecting books and people in the library. One way that we learn to respect and honor our library space is through making it beautiful with student art.
During recess and lunch, students have been creating signs for the library that remind us to clean up after ourselves and take care of books.
Students paint on canvas and draw on chalkboards. Motivational reading signs, favorite book covers, chalkboard signs promoting the IB Learner Profiles, and Pillars of the month. Our library is a student-created space.
We invite students to students to build the culture and fill the space with their vision. When they walk into the room, we want students to feel it’s their academic home – a safe, comfortable place where they can learn, grow, read, and be creative.
