Practicing IB skills at home supports academic achievement, personal growth, and the development of the skills and attributes outlined in the IB Learner Profile, preparing students for future challenges both in and outside the classroom.
Our students at OWNCS can practice being open-minded at home in many ways. Encourage conversations about current events or topics that might create different opinions and have everyone share their thoughts respectfully. Your child can practice being open-minded at home by actively listening and respecting the different viewpoints being presented. In these conversations, they can ask clarifying questions when family members or friends are sharing opinions or stories. This provides a safe opportunity to understand the person's perspective without passing judgment.
One last way for our students to practice being open-minded is to practice new hobbies, and activities, try cooking meals from different countries or visit new places and engage with people of different backgrounds. Children enjoy learning from others. Provide those opportunities Encourage them to show empathy. Putting yourself in the shoes of others will help them to understand varying perspectives.
Here are some activities to encourage open-mindedness:
Writing to a pen pal,
Facilitating friendly debates,
Playing multicultural games,
Learning a new language.
Ask a question a day about the world
Cook foods from different cultures
Watch movies featuring different cultures
