Let's Get Creative!

Below you will find STEAM activities to complete with your class, or with your family at home! Challenge yourself!

Ice Building

Make ice cubes. Share a certain number of ice cubes with each student or group and ½ cup of salt. Each group will be challenged to use their salt and their cubes to create an ice castle. Demonstrate how the salt will melt the ice just a bit so that the ice cubes will stick together. This is the secret to the ice castle challenge. Set a certain amount of time for the builders to create. Share and compare each creation at the end of the building time. You may want to snap pictures before the structures melt away!

Home for Baby Squirrels

Kona makes a home for the squirrel babies in a box of Christmas decorations. Look around your classroom. If you were going to house some baby squirrels, where would you put them? Design a classroom home for squirrels.

Technology

Stumpy is fascinated with the technology in Professor Albert’s house. What kind of technology would a squirrel like to have in her nest? Design some new technology that would serve a squirrel well in her life in Gooseberry Park.

Build-A-Challenge

Stumpy needs a new home for herself and her babies. Use items that she might have found in the park or in her collection (recycled materials) to create a new home for Stumpy. Have small groups of students work together to plan and design their nest/home. Suggested supplies: Index cards, straws, popsicle sticks, string, cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, ribbon, plastic spoons, paper plates, plastic cups, foil, tape, glue, scissors.
