Nursery - mark making is where it starts in September!
Y1 The focus is on "holding" and then writing a sentence. We focus on the "magic 5" - making sense, capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and spellings.
Here, Elizabeth has demonstrated that she can experiment with new, spoken vocabulary.
Y2 Here, Ethan has shown increasing self-awareness as a writer. Vocabulary and punctuation choice, alongside more complex (self-corrected) spellings are evidence of the independence which develops in Y2.
Y3 pupils build on Y2's skills and can now start to write more extended sections of a narrative. Adverbial starters, expanded phrases and more complex punctuation (particularly speech) are skills which Y3 pupils begin to master.
Here, Chloe and Willow have demonstrated a great deal of ambition and skill in their writing.
At the start of Y4, sentences are becoming much more detailed and many children can show a fine control of punctuation. Writing stamina is up: Ivy did her work in 1 hour. Roshni's piece is an example of a skills-practice session.
Y5 begin to write in a mixture of styles and for different purposes/audiences.
