Online Safety

In Year 4, as pupils get older, we look into fake identities (catfishing) and how they can be both harmless (an avatar with no personal details) and harmful (fake personal details).
We also learn about "fake news" and "negative bias" and how opinions are shaped when false or cruel content is not challenged or accepted as real.
In Year 5, pupils learn about how their online identity is tracked through cookies, IPs. We begin to look at how algorithms are used to target people with content and adverts.
We also teach pupils how content which is created "to be funny" to one audience can be offensive to another - and how to avoid this.
Y6 pupils build on all of the above and learn how to build an online presence which creates a positive impression, whilst avoiding pitfalls which can negatively influence how people appear.
We also discuss clickbait, fear mongering, confirmation bias, misinformation, polarisation and algorithms.
