Urban Ecology 11th Grade


Welcome to Urban Ecology!

Course Objectives

As an Urban Design student, I can…

  • Identify community assets, issues, and opportunities through a site analysis

  • Conduct spatial analysis and map community data

  • Create design solutions based on community/resident input

  • Design a sustainable garden space for a neighborhood housing site

  • Become proficient in displaying information and design ideas with 2D graphics

Grading Policy

Grading will be based around the following categories:

  • 50% Assignments: Weekly assignments posted on Google Classroom, including warm-ups and exit tickets

  • 35% Projects: one per mini-mester (9-weeks)

  • 15 % Participation: Engagement in zoom sessions if possible, participation in Discord discussions, communication with Ms. Jacobson every week for support

You can ALWAYS revise ANY assignment to earn more points.

I also know that life happens and you might need to turn things in late. That's okay, too. Just remember that turning things in late adds stress to your life, so do your best to stay on top of things and turn them in one time.

Community Agreements!

This year, students will:

  • Be respectful of others ideas and opinions

  • Be respectful of people’s different abilities, levels, and comfort, especially with language and speaking

  • Have one mic (use the “hand button” in zoom!)

  • Not use oppressive language

  • Be engaged, supportive, and motivate each other

  • Wear a mask outside!

  • Not be afraid to draw!

This year, Ms. J will:

  • Be respectful of students’ ideas and opinions

  • Be respectful of students’ different abilities, levels, and comfort, especially with language and speaking

  • Not use oppressive language

  • Not force people to have their cameras on

  • Provide different opportunities to engage (audio, chat, individual help, etc.)

  • Wear a mask outside!

Technology Tools

We will primarily use the following technology tools during distance learning:

  • Google Classroom - where assignments will be posted

  • Zoom - for real-time class sessions

  • Discord - for discussion threads and help via text

  • Kahoot - for games and quizzes

  • Padlet - for creative posts

  • EdPuzzle - for interactive videos

You don't need to learn all of these right away - we'll start with Google Classroom, Zoom, and Padlet and we'll learn the rest as the semester moves forward!
