The Enrichment Initiative is a program of the Expanded Learning Office, a sub-department of the Community Schools and Student Services Department at Oakland Unified School District.
The Expanded Learning Office's Enrichment Initiatives are funded by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program.
The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides funding for afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. ELO-P is state-level funding, unique to California, and is intended specifically to create and/or support programs that “do not replicate learning activities in the regular school day and school year.”
Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) are academic and learning programs that exist outside of regular school hours, like after school and during summer. Examples of these programs include sports, arts, tutoring programs, after school clubs, and out of school time activities but are not limited to such activities. All PK-6 students who qualify will be offered these opportunities for the 180 days that students are in session and at least 30 non-instructional days outside of their regular school year free of cost.
Benefits of Expanded Learning Opportunities for Older Youth identifies and describes Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOs) that improve academic performance, college and career preparation, social and emotional development, and health and wellness outcomes for underserved youth.
This program is intended to support students for a total of 9 hours inclusive of the school day.
The content of this website was primarily established as a resource for all Enrichment Agencies contracted by the Expanded Learning Office (ExLO) to implement high level enriching experiences to students during the out of school times in partnership with our school site community based lead agencies.
