The purpose of assessment in numeracy, as in all curricular areas, is to identify where children's current knowledge and skills are and to inform the teaching and learning experiences necessary to move their learning forward. Outlined on this page the approaches we take within Carleith.
The power in the pre assessments are designed to be carried out prior to a teaching block in an aspect of numeracy. The results of these assessments are to be used to identify what children already know and to inform your teaching. Instructions on how to use them and where the results are to be recorded are outlined in the guide.
Maths assessment is not a singular assessment carried out at the end of a teaching block. A balanced range of formative, summative, and diagnostic methods, including classroom observations, questioning, and standardised assessments.
To deepen conceptual understanding, open-ended tasks and reasoning activities such as error analysis and "always, sometimes, never" challenges should be used. These approaches are outlined in this slide show as well was very useful links to research and examples found on the last slide.
