Introduction:
Reading circles are used to introduce children to different reading strategies. Over time the children become increasingly independent in using these strategies to run their own "Reading Circle" similar to a small book group.
The reading skills taught through reading circles are Predictor, Clarifier, Summariser, Questioner, Character Detective and Visualiser with the use of Step By Step Guides.
Children are assigned to reading circle groups based on their ability and have some pupil voice in choosing an appropriate text.
Dyslexia friendly texts are also available to support children and the use of audio books.
Reading Circle P6 and P7:
Children will discuss which role (Predictor, Clarifier, Summariser, Questioner, Character Detective and Visualiser) they will be assigned within their group for the following week and assign their reading homework. Within their homework jotter they should start to take notes to help them to complete their task within class.
Part 1: Task - In their roles, children will complete their written task independently using the task section of the 'Step by Step Guides'. Each person within the group has a different role.
Part 2: Discussion - Children then use the discussion section of the 'Step By Step Guides' to lead discussion within the group, discussing each skill.
Part 3: Feedback - Children will use the child friendly rubrics to offer feedback within their group and identify next steps. This is noted on the rubrics to allow the children the opportunity to reflect when taking on the same role. This can be stapled into the child's jotter or kept within their reading folder.
Support:
Most children engage with their reading circles independently, while the teacher moves between groups, listening to their discussions and guiding them to stay focused and on track. However, some groups may benefit from extra guidance, including targeted support, scaffolding, and modelling from the class teacher. The teacher may read sections of the text aloud and ask questions to check understanding. Reading skills tasks can also be adapted or simplified to ensure these learners are fully supported.
Reading Circle P5
Children will have 2 reading circle session, one teacher led and one independent group session.
Teacher led session: The teacher‑led session involves listening to the children reading, setting the reading homework for the week ahead, discussing the text together, and modelling key reading skills to prepare pupils for their group task.
Independent group session: The key difference at this stage is the children will all be working on the same skill in their group task.
Part 1: Task - Children will complete their written task independently using the task section of the 'Step by Step Guides'.
Part 2: Discussion - Children then use the discussion section of the 'Step By Step Guide' to lead discussion within the group.
Part 3: Feedback - Children will use the child friendly rubrics to offer feedback within their group and identify next steps. This is noted on the rubrics to allow the children to reflect. This can be stapled into the child's jotter or kept within their reading folder.
NB: Children initially focus on a single reading skill within their circle, but as they progress, the teacher may introduce additional skills based on professional judgement and each child’s readiness.
