Curriculum Personalisation -

S2 into S3 Design & Manufacture

What does the S3 Design & Manufacture course involve?

Skills Development

The Course provides learners with opportunities to develop skills that are transferrable within learning, life and work: the ability to communicate design ideas creatively and logically; the ability to devise and develop practical solutions to design problems and the ability to manufacture their design ideas. Research, investigation, planning, organisation, problem solving, creativity, innovation, manual dexterity, literacy, numeracy and evaluation skills are key in this course.

Method of Delivery

The Course includes manual graphic, practical and experiential learning opportunities; all of which are supported through detailed forms of written communication. The world of design and manufacturing covers a broad spectrum of experiences. This allow the Course to be flexible; providing scope for personalisation and choice for each learner. In addition, learners will have developed: knowledge and understanding of the factors that impact on the design of products, an appreciation of a range of materials and manufacturing processes and an understanding of the impact of design and manufacturing technologies on our environment and society. This course is both theory and practical based.

An overview of the topics pupils will study in S3 Design & Manufacture is provided below. Please ask any member of Design & Technology staff for further information if required. We are happy to advise and assist as much as possible.

Health & Safety

Teachers will read through the agreement with pupils and highlight to them that this is an official contract which will be used within the department. If they agree with all of the points and are willing to follow these then they should sign their part of the contract (separate sheet provided). The pupils should then take the sheet home to be signed by their parents/guardians. These sheets should be returned to the teacher. Pupils who do not return the contract WILL not be allowed to carry out practical activities.

S3 Exam

The S3 exam will test pupils' knowledge and ability in Design & Manufacture. It will be based around learning completed throughout both S3 and will provide an indication of recommended progression into the Senior Phase.
