15 Minute Writing: "Francis"

We will watch the film together.

Listen carefully for the way words are used to build tension in the story.

Your task will be to choose one of the following to work on:

  • Describe the setting in detail
  • Write the sequel to the story, what happens after
  • Write the story of the character who wrote the words "I did knock first."

Skill Focus: Adverb sentence starters, use frequently to get into the habit.

Analysis of writing -

  • Sentence starters
  • Word count aiming for 150 words in 15 minutes
  • Adverbs at the beginning of the sentence are followed by a comma. Peacefully, Francis rows to the middle of the dark lake.
  • Fullstops, exclamation marks or question marks are at the end of every sentence.
  • Use Read and Write to hear what you have written. Does it make sense. Spend time editing your work.
  • Give your writing to 2 students. They are to give you feedback on what is done well and what needs work.

THIS WEEK'S TASKS

Here are this weeks tasks to start and/or complete. These tasks are ones that you may be given time for, can be worked on at home or if you finish another set task you can move onto. As Year 9s time management is an important skill to develop. This week Mrs Lumley will be organising work with student groups and it is important you know what tasks you can work on.

1. Project Me: Static Image and description ready for Blog post

  • Open a doc in your Social Studies Topic drive folder. Name it: My Head
  • On this doc write a description of what your Static head image shows and tells the viewer about you. This description will go on your blogsite along with the static image of your head. You will need to be aware that when writing this it is for a worldwide audience. (Some of you have started this already)
  • Insert your picture to your description. You can find your image either here or in your Drive under - 9T INT Images.
  • IF your image is not there ask Mrs Lumley to take a picture of it and upload it.


2. Go to Workspace - Current Events - My World News Collection

Choose one of the following news items to write about.

  • This task has been started by many but not completed or submitted by everyone. When you have finished all the questions/tasks please click on submit.

4. Wahine

This task needs to be finished by Thursday of Week 9. Final submissions will be accepted up to 3:30pm by your teacher.

This is an assessment task to see how well you present a project that is audience aware and appropriate for the task brief.

TASK BRIEF

Research, design and present an item to commemorate the Wahine Disaster. The item needs to be able to be printed in a book as a final product.

The item presented, must be appropriate for an audience that could include survivors of the sinking or their relatives.

5. Once you have completed START UP in READING PLUS wait for Mrs Lumley to let you know what level she will start you on. This will be with consideration to your PAT result, your Reading Plus result and the level you got to last year on the programme.

Wahine Commemoration

In Term 1 Year 7 - 9 students will study the sinking of the Wahine. Students from these classes will present a reflection of the event 50 years ago that could be published in a book.

Around 50 will be selected to be published. If a students work is selected the student will be invited to take part in the Flotilla Review. We have been given places on two boats for students to take part.
