Year 9 Integrated MLM

Course objectives


Year 9 Integrated studies is the combined study of English and Social Studies. Both Curriculum areas give opportunity to support the other in building students’ understanding and skills.

English

English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and its literature, communicated orally, visually, and in writing, for a range of purposes and audiences and in a variety of text form. English at Year 9 aims to develop students' English skills to:

  • make meaning of ideas or information they receive (listening, reading, and viewing)
  • create meaning for themselves or others (speaking, writing, and presenting).

Social Studies

The key objective of Year 9 Social Studies is to help students understand their world, and develop the skills and knowledge to participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens.


Integrated Studies Course Content

All students in Year 9 Integrated studies:

  • study a selection of literary genre including The Novel, Non-fiction, Short Stories, Poetry and Film
  • develop creative and formal writing skills
  • are encouraged to maintain personal reading.
  • further develop literacy skills
  • critically view film
  • Reading Plus or Steps to Literacy
  • have their own login to Write that Essay
  • have a College Blog to share their work online
  • have the opportunity to develop oral language skills through class discussion and presentations
  • stay informed of current events
  • study topics in Social Studies that are have local, national or world significance
  • develop mapping and graphing skills to support Social Science studies
  • build self management skills through meeting task deadlines and homework
  • collaborate with students in class, within NZ and worldwide where possible

Online Learning Programmes

  • Reading Plus and/or Steps - twice weekly in class and as a homework task this online reading programme, when used regularly, helps with reading speed and understanding. Students need to make regular scores of 80% or more to move up through the levels.
  • Write that Essay - new to the College this year we have introduced it at all levels from Year 7 to Year 13. All teachers and teacher aide staff are taking part in professional development on how to use the tool effectively and building writing ability throughout the College will be a continued key focus in 2018.
  • Hapara Console - Through use of the console student work can be managed by the teacher and easily accessed by the student through the Workspace.
  • Blogging - Learn Create Share - students will each have a blog to share their learning with whanau and the world
