A great body of research shows that the most important thing for a child's future is whether or not they are reading for fun each night. Every child should develop into someone who reads every single night without needing anyone to force them.
Most of my homework assignments will be focused around reading. Please make sure your child always has a novel that is interesting to them that they can aim to spend a half hour each night reading from.
The primary way you can help is by checking once per week to ensure that your child has a novel they enjoy and to sign their reading log.
Homework: Weekly Reading Log
In an effort to make things easier for you, you will only need to sign or initial your child’s ELA log once per week. Your child already has a copy located in their ELA homework folder and you may sign it now. Estimating your child’s progress is all right as long as they are reading each day. Only by working together can we make your child the type of independent reader they need to become for success in high school and college.
The reading log will be checked each Monday, though you can sign/initial any day of the week before then. This is not intended to be weekend homework, but rather work your child does regularly 4-7 days of the week.
In seventh grade, students will need to become expert, confident independent readers. Virtually all novels throughout the year will be self-chosen with a majority of the reading done at home. Time in class will focus on discussion, writing, and practicing new reading skills. Most of your child’s reading time will be at home. This is the majority of their ELA homework, but it will also impact classwork and assessments, as they will conduct classwork based on the novel they are reading at home.
Homework: Writer's Notebook Extension Activity
Students should finish up any incomplete work in their Writer's Notebook each evening. Often, they will be given time to start in class so that the directions are clear and students who are fully productive and on-task may finish homework during the school day. Many students choose to finish up their work during lunch so that it is one less thing to remember.
Upcoming due dates for individually graded assignments will be posted on Google Classroom as well as Infinite Campus.
