Please note that these categories affect one another. A child who does not do their independent reading homework will not do well on reading assessments or classwork.)
Students will lose one point from their grade each time they are unprepared.
Every day, your child must have an independent reading novel that they are currently reading. This should be brought back and forth between school and home each day.
A homework folder just for ELA (hopefully this letter arrived home in one.)
Two composition notebooks or other notebooks of superior quality.
A pencil case with writing utensils. Students will need a new box of pencils about once per month.
A hand pencil sharpener so that students can remain seated.
A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
Participation is scored regularly using the GROUPS rubric:
G- Gives thoughtful feedback
R- Respects Others
O- On task at all times
U- Uses soft voice
P- Participates in class discussions
S- Stays with appropriate group.
A student will lose one point out of ten each time they struggle with one of these components. There will be multiple participation grades and grades will change sometimes as students improve.
Students given after school detention will take the late bus (3:44) home. I will reach out to you to confirm that it is all right for your child to stay late before keeping them.
If they cannot stay, they will serve three 20 minute lunch detentions.
Detention will sometimes be issued for falling severely behind.
During detention, restorative practices will be used to help build a positive relationship with the child and to get them back on track.
