Hello and welcome!
My name is Emily Shoots, aka Mrs. Emily, and I am the counselor at Nichols Elementary. This is my fourth year at Nichols, Previously, I have been working in Oceanside Unified School District as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for the past seven years. I am thrilled to be working with the students, staff, and families here at Nichols.

Classroom Lessons
I provide monthly classroom lessons to ALL classes at Nichols. The topics I cover are based on the 5 CASEL competencies:
Self-awareness
Self-management
Relationship skills
Social Awareness
Responsible Decision Making
Small Groups
Small Groups
I host several small groups focused on specific topics, or improving certain skills. Some previous group topics include:
Understanding our Feelings
Peer Relationships
Grief and Loss
Problem Solving
Boosting Self-Esteem and Confidence
Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling
Some students might benefit from speaking with me one-on-one. I do brief check-ins with students, about smaller issues such as peer conflict or feeling mad in a specific situation. I also provide more in-depth counseling over a longer period of time to students who might have larger concerns, such as a familial change or emotional struggles.
Although classroom lessons are provided to everyone, I will ask for parent or guardian permission before students start in small groups or individual counseling.
