Kindergarten Readiness

With the excitement of kindergarten fast approaching for your child, here are some helpful hints to help all students be ready for day one of their journey through school.

By the beginning of kindergarten it's encouraged that your child knows these concepts. If you are looking for creative ideas to help your child with these concepts I encourage you to look at all of the wonderful ideas on Pinterest or just a general internet search will give you some fun ideas to do with your child. Reading

· Recognize the letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and

lowercase out of order

· Identify and produce at least 10 letter sounds

· Recognize my first name

· Hold a book and turn pages (readers read left to right)

· Identify some words that rhyme

Writing

· Use correct grasp to hold pencil, marker, crayon, etc.

· Write first name

· Try to write in a left to right direction

· Try to draw clear pictures of objects

Math

· Count to 20

· Recognize numbers 1-10 (out of order)

· Point and count up to 10 objects

· Sort items by size, shape, or color

· Recognize basic shapes (square, rectangle, circle, triangle, and

hexagon)

Social Behaviors

· Take turns and share

· Sit quietly and listen

· Follow simple directions

· Stand and walk in line

· Raise my hand and wait to be called on

· Take care of things and know how to put things away

Life Skills

· Use the bathroom by myself (washing my hands with soap)

· Zip and unzip own clothes

· Button and unbutton own clothes

· Open any food containers that are for snack or lunch

· Use a tissue to wipe my nose

· Drink from a drinking fountain

· Try to tie own shoes
