The Language Acquisition and Biliteracy team works specifically with children whose primary or home language is a language other than English and with children in the Dual Language Program. Arizona laws mandate how and why children are tested in the English language assessment, called the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA). State laws also stipulate how and why children would be retested, identified as English language learner (ELL), and reclassified as a fluent English speaker. At least once every school year, all children identified as ELL or with a primary home language other English are tested for English proficiency until the results of the test identify the child as English proficient.
Current Arizona rules also require school districts to assess children using the AZELLA for two years following their reclassification as English proficient. All Osborn teachers receive training and support on how to best teach children of different language backgrounds. These include training in strategies for language development in the 2-Hour model and Dual Language Immersion program for all content-area teachers. Osborn schools also provide compensatory education, usually through a before or after school tutoring program, as well as a District-wide summer school program available to all ELL children in the District.
